I will cede to this point. The definition of application in Marryiam-Webster that I think is most relevant is 3:
3: a program … that performs a particular task or set of tasks
So I will update with: scripting is a smaller form of application building; such that it performs tasks at a smaller scale than a larger-scale application. The words here are close to synonymous and it was confusion here. This falls to program requirements, and what you expect the application to do after X amount of time put into it.
