Travel Day 14 – A City on the Water

Today we head to Venice. I’m absolutely ecstatic to finally head to my dream place. Before we set out I quickly ran back to a store in Florence where I had my eyes on a wallet after I had finished packing. Once we were all set and ready to go we grabbed some food at the corner store we had gotten our breakfasts at all week and continued to the train station. On our way there we actually passed some fellow Canadians (2 from Saskatchewan and 1 from Alberta) on their way to Venice as well but on a different train we assumed. We boarded at 12:15 and the train was to take about 2hrs so we threw on some headphones and relaxed.

Dean woke me up when we were on the bridge to Venice. I swear my smile has not left my face since that moment. I’ve finally made it to Venice! All the hard work at BCIT has paid off. The sleepless nights, the stress, the worry of not passing and actually passing. It’s culminated to this moment in Venice. The water lapping against the building structures and the boats heading to and fro, all of it is just miraculous. I’m not going to lie, I’ve had a tear or two in my eye since arriving. How could I not? Even with the herds of tourists, it’s exactly as I have imagined.

We got off the train and got our ACTV passes for the week so that we can use the water bus as much as we’d like. It took about 26 minutes or so to get to the hostel, and even though the bus took us around the industrial side of Venice it was still stunning. I think I’ve taken about 60 photos just on the first day alone. Once we checked in and dropped off our bags, we headed out to find some food – as we hadn’t eaten yet – and found a little pizza place just in behind some of the main pathways.

After exploring some more we made our way over to Chiesa di San Moisé to check out the church. There were practically NO tourists within the church so we had a great view of everything. We wandered some more before we decided to hear back for the day and just relax at the hostel. A nice relaxing first day in Venice before we head out tomorrow and see Piazza San Marco!
